Dan Leon Hill age 81 of Algonac, MI. passed away May 1, 2022 in his home. He was born February 14, 1941 in Grand Haven, MI. to the late Roy and Ethel (Newberg) Hill.
Mr. Hill was a US Navy Veteran having served on the Destroyer USS Coney as a sonarman. His tour of duty was during the Cuban Missile Crisis where he received a commendation for spotting a Russian Submarine, that turned out to have nuclear capabilities.
Dan was employed by the Champion Harsens Island Auto Ferry as a Captain, having worked his way up from deckhand, mechanic, and manager, for over 52 years of service retiring in 2018. He was a former member of the Harsens Island Volunteer Fire Department. He enjoyed all types of athletic activities from being a member of the Road Runner Running Club in the 1980’s to playing golf, talking and playing basketball, tennis, softball, etc. He was an avid scuba diver and fisherman, having caught a 50 lb. Sturgeon off the ferry boat.
Mr. Hill is survived by his daughters Rene (Mark) Young and Celeste (Tim) Schultz, sisters Sandra (Bill) Mannisto, Sue Pippinger, and Tiiu Vaas, grandchildren Amanda (Sean) Geary, Toni (Adam) True, Ryan (Jen) Schultz, Rebecca (Steve) Houk, Allison Young, and Michael Young, great grandchildren Caitlyn Geary, Keagan Geary, Brody Schultz, Ryder Schultz, Kennedi Houk, and Madison Houk. He was also survived by many loving nieces, nephews, and cousins.
A celebration of life will be held from 5:00 to 8:00 PM, with a memorial service at 6:00 PM, Friday May 13, 2022 at the Algonac Lions Club 1905 Mill St. Algonac, MI 48001. Arrangements by the Gilbert Funeral Home, Algonac, MI. In lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made to the Family Wishes.
